Health Care Bill Expands Direct Student Loan Program

The extensive health care legislation that’s been in the news for a year or longer was voted upon and passed a short while ago. The final bill looks as if it will be signed soon. A rather surprising addition to the legislation is that the federal government direct student loan program will be substantially expanded.

The direct student loan program has been fought by student loan organizations ever since this was first unveiled in the Clinton administration. These loan providers have utilized a small army of lobbyists to influence Congress to cut the government out of making student loans direct to college students and require these types of loans to go through the loan corporations.

It has been definitively confirmed that the costs for the government are much lower if education loans are made directly to college students. The difference is substantial, and this is part of the explanation these two seemingly disparate measures have been put together. That is, as a way to pay for the health care bill, a savings of around $60 billion U.S. is actually projected for cutting out the student loan corporations. Put simply, the federal authorities have been giving away billions of dollars to education loan firms over the years. Most of the leading executives in these kinds of companies have consequently become rich. What many of us are unmindful of is that these corporations are actually preying upon lots of student borrowers in order to get their hands on this income.

A person might ask, if the authorities could save taxpayers billions of dollars on wasted spending, precisely why wouldn’t they do this on basic principle? Why does this legislation have to be attached to the health care legislation in order to realize these cost savings? The answer is that the lobbyists talked about before who have been engaged by the education loan firms have been extremely effective. It seems that simply by providing a small campaign contribution to our elected officials, in many instances Republicans, and throwing in a few minor incentives like excursions to exotic destinations or maybe a job for a family member, the Congress will bend to wishes of the student loan corporations. They’ll allow tens of billions of dollars to be steered from U.S. taxpayers and merely handed to these corporations.

And what could be the major reason for carrying on with on this wasteful path? The answer is that it will preserve jobs. In other words they will take income from some people just so they can give it to other people. And if a few billion is skimmed from here or there along the way, who cares? It is a little like the military services airplane program that was mentioned during the budget debate last year. Some high-priced airplane costing billions of dollars is actually being made for the military services, but they have publicly reported that they’ve got no mission for the airplane and really do not want it. They’ve asked for the program to be ended since it takes away resources that can be utilized efficiently in other places. So what do our congressional leaders do? They keep constructing these useless planes for the reason that it will save “jobs”. A job that isn’t producing anything of use and that exists only because congress is extorting money from taxpayers isn’t a real job. It is a government giveaway package. It benefits absolutely no one but the individual receiving the income and the member of congress whose district or perhaps state the airplane manufacturing plant exists in, because the people who are the recipients of these bogus salaries keep voting for him or her.

And so in any case the direct student loan program will certainly grow dramatically shortly, and the student loan providers will certainly hire more lobbyists to once again try to have it reversed as they have done previously. In the meantime some student loan borrowers will avoid becoming captives of the student loan firms and will not end up being preyed upon. However, there are countless ex-borrowers who’ve gotten into financial difficulties and who will continue to be in the clutches of the student loan firms with absolutely no way out of the huge penalties and charges they impose. An example is the 41 year old doctor who was in the news recently. She borrowed $250,000 to finance medical school and today owes $555,000 in student debt, penalties and interest despite having made payments for some years. She has high monthly loan installments, but she will be about seventy years old before her liability is paid off. The direct loan law has unfortunately arrived a bit too late for her.

Natural Health Food: An Option For Many Consumers

Natural Health Food: An Option For Many Consumers

The term natural health food refers to foods that are considered organically grown and raised. Many consumers are finding that they prefer natural health food in order to avoid pesticides and other unnatural consequences of modern farming and ranching.

Natural health food gives consumers more choices in the food market letting them determine which type of product that they would like.

What is Natural Health Food?

Natural health food is food that fits the FDA’s description of organically grown. This can refer to livestock too, as livestock that is allowed to graze in fields that have not been sprayed by pesticides or given either hormone injections to enhance size or antibiotics that are used to prevent common illnesses. The food that is given to the livestock must also fall into the organic range, being organically grown feed.

Often livestock that are considered natural are also termed as “free range” animals. This means that they are not penned and they are allowed to live in an open atmosphere. Livestock that is raised with the intent of butchering is often contained in rows of pens that many feel is inhumane and there are even eggs on the market that are labeled as being produced by free range chickens.

Natural health food also describes fruits and vegetables that have been organically grown without using chemicals to control the weeds or insects within the fruits and vegetables. These foods must again meet the standard set by the FDA to be given the label of organically grown. Organically grown foods can also be foods that are processed with organic materials like macaroni or cereal. These foods are allowed the label of organic as long as they are made with 70% up to 100% organic material.

The consumer is assured that the natural health foods that they are purchasing are labeled correctly by checking the label on the side that lists all ingredients. Natural health food may also refer to herbs that many natural food stores sell. These herbs are once again grown in an organic setting so that they can be classified as organic and that the consumer knows that they are pesticide free.

Natural health food is an option for many consumers who are looking for more control in what they purchase to consume. Food that is organic is becoming increasingly more acceptable and more and more stores are carrying products that boast that they are an organic food.

Health News – Calories Burned In A Day

Calories Burned In a Day-To Lose Weight?

The amount of calories the body consumes in a day is different for every individual. I am sure you have already noticed on the nutritional labels of the foods you purchase that the “percent daily values” are based on a 2,000 calorie diet. 2,000 calories is just a rough standard for what people consume per day. Your body might need more or less than 2,000 calories. So you diet/workout weekly, is there an amount of calories burned in a day that you need? Height, weight, gender, age and activity level all affect your caloric requirements.

3 Factors That Affect Your Caloric Requirements

There are three main factors involved in calculating how many calories your body needs per day, basal metabolic rate, physical activity, and thermic effect of food.

Basal Metabolic Rate

Your basal metabolic rate is the amount of energy your body needs to function when resting. This accounts for about 60-70% of calories burned in a day and also includes the energy required to keep your heart beating, your lungs breathing, your eyelids blinking and your body temperature stabilized. Calories burned in a day is really important. Men have a higher BMR than women.

Physical Activity

The next factor in the equation is your physical activity. Physical activity also includes everything from brushing your teeth in the morning to running a mile. The number of calories burned in a day actually has to do with your body weight. Calories burned in a day are very important.

Thermic Effect of Food

The thermic effect of food is the final calculation to formula of calories your body burns. This is the amount of energy your body uses to digest the food that you consume. It takes energy to breakdown you food. To calculate the number of calories you disburse in this process, multiply the total number of calories you eat in a day by 0.10, or 10 percent.

How to Actually Do the Sun Salutations

In the article “What Makes Sun Salutations So Great? “, we had gone over a brief overview of the Sun Salutations aka Surya Namaskara, in this article we will discuss the actual execution of the exercise.

How To Do The Sun Salutations

1. Prayer Pose: Stand with the hands positioned at your chest, palms touching and facing each other (think of being in a prayer mode) looking straight ahead. This pose establishes a state of concentration.
2. Inhale and stretch the arms above the head.

You will notice an inevitable stretch of the abdominal organs and your breathing apparatus including the lungs, diaphragm and wind pipe.

While in this pose, you will realize that it:

- Exercises the arms and shoulder muscles
- Tones the spinal nerves.
- Removes excess weight.

3. Exhale and bend forward while touching the toes (or as far as possible. If your are not that flexible, you may bend the knees slightly.)

This pose

- Helps with stomach/digestive disorders and abdominal ailments
- Is reputed to making the spine flexible and tones the spinal nerves.

4. Inhale and stretch the right leg away from the body but keep the hands and left foot firmly on the ground. While bending the head backward the left knee should be between the hands.

While in this pose, you will be massaging the abdominal organs while simultaneously strengthening the leg muscles and inducing balance in the nervous system. Some yoga gurus claim this helps with male sexual dysfunctions such as premature ejaculation and thin or weak sperm.

5. Inhale and hold the breath.

Now move the left leg from the body. You should be in the plank/up position of the popular push-ups.

This pose is said to aid with:

- Strengthening the nerves and muscles of the arms and legs.
- Toning the Spinal Nerves.

6. Exhale and lower the body to the floor. In this position, only 8 portions of the body should come in contact with the floor: the two feet, two knees, two hands, chest and forehead.

Owing to the physiological effects of this pose, it:

- Strengthens the legs and arm muscles.
- Develops the chest and exercises the region between the shoulder blades.

7. Inhale and bend back as much as possible bending the spine to as far as you can.

According to yoga gurus, owing to the body’s alignment in this position, this pose has a toning effect on the reproductive organs and is said to help with digestion. Furthermore, it massages and tones practically most, if not all the visceral organs such as the spleen, liver, kidney etc.

8. Exhale and lift the body of the floor. Keep the feet and heels on the floor. In this position, you will be in the popular downward facing dog position.

9. Inhale and bring the right foot along the level of the hands; left foot and knee should touch the ground. This position is similar to the 4th one above, except that this time your right foot is what’s between your hands.

10. Exhale and bring the left leg forward. Keep the knees straight and bring the head down to the knees as in the third position.

11. Raise the arms overhead and bend backward inhaling. As in Position 2

12. Exhale and drop the arms and relax

You have now completed one round. Do as many rounds as you can within 3, 6, 12 or 24. Stop when you begin to lose breath or sweat profusely.

Helpful Hint:

At 24 rounds of Surya Namaskara, Sun Salutations, you have done pretty much enough and with time should be gaining flexibility and strength to attempt strengthening poses in due time. Try to be brisk and swift within each round as in military style motions.

Try to see to it that you relax in the corpse pose at the end of the exercises for the length of time spent in going over cycle.

For example, 12 repetitions takes about 10 minutes to execute, so you would want to observe the corpse pose for the same length of time.

So there you have it, tips to help you too begin a wonderful journey into yoga with its all so wonderful Sun Salutations.

Health Insurance Contracts – Contract Basics

Insurance contracts are binding and legal contracts in which there is a legal agreement made between two or more eligible parties where specific coverage will happen in exchange for the cost of the health insurance premium. The two parties involved in health insurance contracts are the applicant seeking the insurance coverage and the health insurance company that will provide the coverage. Applicants must be of the legal age of consent and be considered mentally competent. The carrier in question must be state authorized to put together insurance contracts and the insurance representative must be licensed as per the state regulations.

While it is not law that the policies be in writing, contracts are always put in writing because of their complexity. So many details need to be discussed and written out in order to ensure the insurance contract meets the satisfaction of both the applicant and the insurance company involved. Each state has regulations and laws that dictate basic insurance contracts and their provisions. This is why such contracts are often of a rather form letter format and any additions must be in the form of riders or exclusions.

Health insurance contracts are always divided into four basic parts:

(1) Title page- the title page or the policy face is the page on which all the pertinent details such as the policyholder’s name, the policy’s terms and limits, the dates the monthly premium is due as well as the dollar amount of the premium are listed. This facilitates ease in finding the important dates and amounts as well as the highlights of the health insurance policy.

(2) Conditions- this page gives specific details to the expectations and rights of both the insured person and the health insurance company in question.

(3) Insuring clause- this the page that highlights the insurance company’s promise to covered losses incurred that are detailed in the policy’s coverage in exchange for the policyholder’s faithfulness in complying with the policy terms and payment of the monthly premium agreement.

(4) Exclusions- a list of risks and details that the insurance company will not cover, meaning things that are not included in the insurance medical coverage policy.

Valid insurance contracts are legally binding on the part of both parties, the applicant or policyholder and the carrier providing the coverage. Applicants agree to the monthly premium and the terms of the insurance contracts while the insurance companies agree to pay for the costs that are specified under the coverage plan.

Healthy Chocolate Health Tips

Science now confirms chocolate is healthy. Medical doctors are proving that chocolate is healthy through clinical trials and research. The word is spreading; from radio, to television, to Internet, doctors now confirm that chocolate has numerous health benefits both physically and emotionally. So how do we know which chocolate is truly healthy and good for us? Here are some healthy chocolate tips to help you find the chocolate that is right for you.

More and more people today are drawn to eating chocolate for health benefits. With nine out of ten people who love chocolate and one out of two of them eating it every day, this is indeed good news. What do we want to look for in a healthy chocolate? First of all, the more unprocessed cocoa powder a chocolate contains, the more flavanoids (plant based antioxidants) are present.

It is best to look for a chocolate with at least 70% unprocessed cocoa. Secondly, it should be a raw food chocolate. When chocolate is heated above one hundred degrees Fahrenheit the majority of the nutritional properties in the antioxidants are destroyed, leaving it devoid of the precious nutrients sought after in the first place. Seek to find a chocolate that has low-glycemic sweeteners, such as raw sugar cane, as opposed to refined sugar. Low glycemic chocolates are diabetic friendly and don’t leave you feeling “crashed”, due to high blood sugar spikes associated with refined sugars.

Not all chocolate is created equal. Another important point to consider when choosing a healthy chocolate is the ORAC rating. ORAC stands for oxygen radical absorbance capacity, which is a measurement of the antioxidants ability to eradicate disease-causing agents (free radicals). Some chocolate producers have ORAC ratings on their products, guaranteeing the antioxidant effectiveness. A company called Brunswick Labs tests antioxidants on a variety of foods, including chocolate, giving them a certified score. The higher the ORAC score the more antioxidants a food contains, thus healthier for the body.

Not all dark chocolate is healthy for the body. Many people believe that if a chocolate has a high percentage of dark chocolate that it is automatically high in antioxidants. However, most chocolate is dutched (alkalized, to modify flavor and color) and roasted during processing. Dutching and heating destroys the antioxidants and their capacity to eradicate free radicals. It is also common for dark chocolate to be filled with refined sugars, caffeine, waxes, and unhealthy fillers, which are all well known for contributing to adverse health effects.

Chocolate that is considered healthy has certain characteristics. One should consider where the cocoa beans come from. Cocoa beans harvested in more rugged, harsh conditions are more potent and richer in polyphenols (antioxidants). It is also important to know what the growing conditions are and what types of farms the beans are grown on. Cocoa trees that are grown next to other fruit trees often produce milder beans.

A natural, privately controlled setting is best at producing beans without use of pesticides. Another point to consider is fillers and fats. Chocolate rich in healthy fats such as cocoa butter and omega fatty acids are beneficial to the body. Avoid chocolate with milk fats or hydrogenated oils….bad fats. It is also of great importance to know that Not all chocolate contains caffeine, though caffeine is often associated with chocolate, it is not a naturally occurring ingredient. Caffeine is usually added to commercial chocolates.

Eating the right chocolate on a steady basis can be a great benefit to your health. Knowing the ingredients, processing methods, ORAC ratings, and growing conditions can enhance your choices and experiences with chocolate.

The bottom line; yes you CAN have your chocolate and EAT it too!

Neglected Health Tips

There are many places to find a good health tip, whether it is on the internet or in a book. I am going to go over a few different tips that are important, but sometimes neglected. As I say in most of my health and fitness articles, the tips I give are not hard or boring. They will make getting healthy and fit an easy thing to do. You will be surprised.

Something that will help you out is adding some kind of fitness into your life. It does not have to be strenuous or tiring by any means. It can be as simple as taking a walk around your block. Adding this into your schedule helps out on so many levels. It gives you a chance to get outside and breathe some fresh air. It helps keep your body active, many different muscle will keep stimulated. Walking outside also gives you a chance to open up your chest and breathe deep. A lot of people that I talk too, that use walking in their daily routine, tell me it not only does wonders for their body, but also for their mind. They say that being outside alone gives them time to think and really clear their mind of stress. Give it a try; with this simple good health tip you will notice a great difference.

A pretty self-explanatory good health tip is to stop eating out. I’m not saying that every place that you eat out is unhealthy, but chances are that the majority of them are not good for your health. Usually ‘eat out’ places tend to use a lot of processed foods and contain tons of salts. If you do find yourself at a fast food place, try and eat one of their healthy alternatives. Now, even the most unhealthy food restaurants will have a couple of healthy choices on their menu.

Another tip comes with one simple and common word, water. Yes water; the majority of people, young and old, don’t get their daily water requirements. Again, a very simple good health tip that works wonders. Start drinking more water instead of the regular sugary drinks. Examples are coffee, soda, and juice. Of course it is unrealistic to cut these things out of your diet completely but instead try to exchange some of them for water. Somewhere around 8 cups of water a day is a healthy amount. Get in the routine of having water with you. If you have water with you, there is no need to go and buy a liter of soda from the corner store.

My last good health tip comes with little explanation. When you eat, please eat slowly. Most people eat like wild animals. Enjoy your food and let your body take it with ease, don’t force it all down and let your body have to suffer. You’ll notice when you eat slower that you won’t be eating as much. Eating slow will give your body a chance to tell you when it is full, instead of eating it all up quickly and your body not having a chance to tell you to stop. Eat slowly, your food will taste better!!

Happy Diet News

The weight reduction product industry has evolved into a multi-billion dollar business trend. This translates as good news to diet product executives, but not such good news for weight loss hopefuls. The best way to lose a few pounds and stay on top of well reviewed products is by visiting Happy Diet News. Nutrition – What Are the Nutritional Needs?

Nutrition – What Are the Nutritional Needs?

Nutrition as it applies to our daily lives means that we take in what we need to maintain our body’s healthy state. Nutrition has become an important word thanks to the involvement of the USDA in our daily food requirements, and the FDA’s involvement in determining what is and is not dangerous for us to consume.

But what is our responsibility in the nutrition game? Do we understand what our nutritional requirements are, how to fulfill those requirements, and how to look for real nutritional value in our foods?

I’m not sure that nutrition has been successfully addressed in its own right. We hear nutrition in relation to our vitamin intake, our fortified cereals and milk, and in the context that we need “nutritional value” from our food choices. But what really is nutrition when applied to our daily bodily functions?

Today, we must determine how much nourishment we need, how much physical exercise we need, and how best to accomplish those ends. Calorie needs, nutritional needs, physical needs, and education about those needs now is information we should all understand, at least as it applies to our individual self.

If you will visit your local doctor, library, or fitness center, there is massive amounts of information available to help educate and to help you make good health choices, no matter what the age group.

Nutrition refers to the nurturing of our body, in our ability to keep it healthy and functioning as it is supposed to do. Our ability to provide the body with all it’s necessary food, vitamins, and minerals so that we continue to thrive in our daily life processes.

If you were to take a cross section of the population, and check for adequate levels of the most used and fortified vitamins and minerals, you would probably find that as high as 80% or the population is lacking in a least one of the vitamins and minerals.

Now, that doesn’t sound too bad, until you stop to think, what if it’s calcium? A calcium deficiency brings on osteoporosis, a deteriorating of the bone. This disease alone costs millions in medical expense to the population.

Can you see how a little more cooperation and open-minded participation on the part of our medical field could result in far fewer health problems? It would also have provided the general population with a viable way to discern their nutrition, vitamin and mineral needs, accurately.

So how do we determine that we are providing the essential nutritional needs? That knowledge comes by educating ourselves about what our individual needs are, the needs of our family, and then taking that knowledge and applying it to the foods we buy, that we prepare, and that our families consume.

Quite often, our vitamin and mineral needs outweigh our caloric needs. In those instances, we turn to manufactured vitamins and minerals to fill the gap. This is a part of our nutritional needs, also.

Nutrition is one of the most complex areas to gain useful knowledge about, because there are so many components, and because each person has their own individual needs.

Women needs differ from those of men, and older women’s needs differ from those of a young girl. As we age, our needs constantly change; therefore continual education about nutrition is a fact of life. The nutritional needs of a cardiac patient are different than those of a healthy, middle-aged hiker.

Can you see the complexity of the situation now? What we really need is to develop a scale that determines the nutritional needs of our bodies on a cellular level, so that as we age, as our physical condition changes, or our health changes, we can recalculate our needs, based on cellular changes and content in our body.

Individuality is the key to understanding each person’s nutritional needs, and then working to educate us is the key to fulfilling those nutritional needs. Good nutrition should be the ultimate goal of every person alive.
