Back to School Health Tips

Ah, summer…sleeping in, going barefoot, and only loosely structured days. Remember that feeling? Unfortunately, we always knew that when mom or dad started taking is shopping for school clothes, that freedom would soon be over. When we went back, getting used to the whole regimen thing was difficult. The first few weeks was kind of rough.

There are things we, as parents, can do to make the transition easier. They’re simple and a few of them will not be appreciated by our kids, but they are worth the difficulties petulant children can pose.

1) Exercise: I grew up on a farm, so I had exercise all year, though we didn’t think of it that way. However, in the city kids might not be so lucky. Also, now that we have cable television, video games and other electronics, our kids aren’t so physically active.

After a couple of months being a mouse potato, going to gym class can be very difficult. In some kids, it can also be dangerous. Late July or early August is a good time to slowly start building up your children’s stamina so they are ready for gym class, sports and whatever else they may be interested in.

2) Hydration: Start the kids on a habit of remaining hydrated. You can work this in with the increased exercise. Many schools recognize the need for water breaks, etc. but it’s not as easy to convince the kids they need it. If they’re thirsty, they’re already dehydrated. Making it a habit is the best way to head that problem off.

3) Medications: Some children require medication during the day. Asthmatics in particular need it. However, most schools will not allow the children to carry their own medications; they have to go to the nurse’s office to take it. Now is a good time to start them in the habit of coming to you at specific times to get it. That way, when it’s the nurse, they’re ready.

4) Physicals: Schools generally require athletes to have a physical before taking part in any sport. It’s a great idea for all children to do this, and right before school starts is a good time. This way, medical conditions can be caught early and treated when success is the most likely outcome.

5) Shoes: What sort of shoe is appropriate depends on the activities for which they will be worn. Find out what is going to be on the schedule, then take your child to a shoe specialist to get the right shoes. The specialist will also look for foot problems, such as fallen arches.

6) Vaccinations: Measles and whooping cough are resurging in the U.S. right now. Six infants have died just in SoCal this year. Make sure your child is up to date on all vaccinations to prevent adding another child to the growing stats on childhood diseases making a comeback.

7) Wake Up Time: That is most kids’ least favorite time of day. However, if you want them used to the idea, starting now is wise. You may also want to start insisting on an earlier bedtime. Your kids may argue that a recent study shows that sleeping in allows for greater ability to learn, but until schools change their start times, that’s not going to happen.

Your kids may not appreciate what you’re doing for them until they are older, but they will eventually see that you were right. This is one of those areas where being a parent isn’t exactly easy, but it’s a lot better than the alternatives.

What are the 4 Brainwave Patterns and How Do They Effect Your Health

WHAT ARE BRAINWAVES?

Every moment of your life your brain is active. It is pulsing
with electrical impulses; you heard that right, electricity! The
electricity or electrical current generated by the brain can be
measured with an electroencephalogram (EEG), which measures the
frequency of the electrical current. This frequency or speed of
the brainwave is measured in Hertz(HZ).

Now here is the really cool part. These frequencies can be
associated with your state of mind at any particular moment.
This means that your state of mind, for example being relaxed,
frightened, or sleepy…can be “seen” in your brainwave
frequencies. The speed of the frequency allows us to categorize
our brainwaves into four broad categories.

WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENT BRAINWAVE PATTERNS?

There are four common brainwave patterns that have been well
researched and documented. They are:

BETA WAVES – 14Hz to 20Hz. Beta waves are associated with normal
waking consciousness. They are present when you are focused on
activities in the outside world.

ALPHA WAVES – 8Hz to 13Hz. Alpha waves are likened to a light
meditation. They are prevalent when you daydream. They will
become stronger when your eyes are closed.

THETA WAVES – 4Hz to 7Hz. Theta waves occur during heightened
states of creativity and are found with a deep meditative state.

DELTA WAVES – .5Hz to 3Hz. Delta waves are found in a deep sleep
state or unconsciousness. Also, Delta waves are common in very
deep meditation.

FOCUS, CREATIVITY AND CONCENTRATION – THE ALPHA CONNECTION

A predominance of Alpha waves in the brain is associated with
accelerated learning, focus and enhanced creativity. When you
are focus on something, there is a predominance of Alpha waves.
No matter what your profession or hobby, these attributes will
increase your productivity and enhance your experience.

FINDING THE HIGHER SELF – THE THETA CONNECTION

A deep meditative state is true bliss. Increase your Theta waves
and you are on your way to this state. In the Theta state you
can lose your attachment to the physical body. You will feel a
deep sense of physical relaxation. This disconnect of mind and
body allows you to focus on the inner you, the higher self. This
is the ideal state to begin your journey into meditation.

SLEEP AND MORE – THE DELTA CONNECTION

A Delta state has long been associated with sleep. If you have
trouble sleeping, the CDs targeting this range will help
immensely. Having a CD that targets the Delta brainwaves will
allow you to enter a deep sleep state easily. It will be time to
say goodbye to insomnia!

Recently there has also been some research that suggests that an
even deeper meditative state can occur during predominate Delta
wave activity. As you gain experience and comfort with
meditation, you may want to try reaching a Delta state during
meditation.

Health News: The Secret To Good Health Is Simple

How good is your health?

Most people forget that good health is the greatest asset they can have in life.

They work hard all their lives without taking proper care of themselves
for many years until one day they break down.

Don’t wait until you’ve a nervous break down, to face the reality.

You should balance your activities with the proper amount of rest.

Some of the leading experts in the field of aging now believe that regular exercise along with the proper amount of rest may actually add years to the life span.

Results from a number of tests indicate that speed and muscular strength of many of the elderly can be extended.

Leading authorities agree that this new data is going to shatter many of the myths about aging and physical performance.

The conclusion now is that the performance and ability of the elderly has long been underestimated, diet, proper sleep and exercise along with rest and relaxation are all important factors in preserving our bodies.

Laughter is one of the best things for your mental and physical state.

People are naturally attracted to someone who has a good sense of humor.

You can develop a good outlook and a good sense of humor by associating with and surrounding yourself with pleasant happy people.

Recognize that stress is a killer. A life filled with stress can really wreak havoc on your body causing a number of illnesses such as hear attacks, strokes, asthma, gastric problems, menstrual disorders, ulcerative colitis, angina, irritable colon, increased blood pressure, ulcers, headaches, etc.

There are different types of stress such as mental, emotional and physical.

Emotional stress seems to take the greatest toll on everyone.

All stress is not bad; in fact, life would not be very interesting if it were not met with challenges.

However, too much stress, too often with no effective and appropriate outlet, does not allow the body and soul to recuperate.

You might review a typical week to see if you can identify things that might be making you anxious or causing you stress.

Once identified, stressors can be attacked and eliminated.

Are you a worrier? Chronic worriers don’t have more serious problems than others – they just think they do.

Many worriers try to cope by trying not to think about their problems, but this just makes things worse.

Doctors say that chronic worriers feel less anxious if they actually spend a half-hour a day thinking specifically about their problems.

Get plenty of exercise. People who are physically fit look good and feel good.

A good exercise regimen will lengthen your life. Improve your appearance, build self confidence and help delay the aging process.

Remember that you need to do something physical every day.

If you don’t use your joints, quite simply they’ll tighten up with age to create the stooped, bent and worn out appearance we so often associate with old age.

Studies have shown that people with arthritis experience less pain if they continue to keep their joints flexible.

As one gets older, the bones tend to get brittle which is why it is common for senior citizens to break bones and especially their hips when they fall.

Eating right, getting proper sleep and learning to relax are all very valuable in maintaining a healthy body and mind.

And keep in mind that eating healthy foods and avoiding those high in fats, sodium and cholesterol will help to decrease your risk of heart disease, high blood pressure and associated problems.

May these good health news and insights help you to live a longer, healthy and happy life.

Warmly,

Watermelon Obsession – Unlock the Key to Health!

Are you watermelon obsessed? Do you love gulping down this fruit in all forms? If yes, then it’s great news for your health! A storehouse of vitamins and minerals, watermelons keep your heart and nervous system in blooming health. This red fruit is essentially a summer crop but is now available almost throughout the year in the grocery stores.

Juicy, sweet, and succulent, watermelon juice can be the apt energizing drink during hot summer days. Around 93% of the fruit comprises of water, which helps to overcome state of dehydration. Health experts confirm that watermelons are fat-free and cholesterol-free, besides being rich in Vitamin A, Vitamin B6, Vitamin B1, Vitamin C, and health fibers which are good for the functioning of the heart and the nervous system. Presence of Vitamin A in this fruit is good for eye health and keeps night blindness at bay.

However, it is lycopene that is the most talked about nutrient in watermelons. Research suggests that lycopene is found in almost all red fruits except strawberries and is beneficial for resisting the occurrence of prostate cancer, and heart diseases. This red antioxidant traps cancer-promoting agents called free oxygen radicals. These free radicals oxidize cholesterol and make it stick to the walls, thus increasing chances of strokes and heart attacks. Antioxidants exercise control over these free radicals to help prevent the onset of fatal diseases.

The antioxidants in watermelon have been found to minimize the onset of fatal diseases like asthma, atherosclerosis, diabetes, colon cancer, and arthritis. Fitness freaks can easily find their staple diet in watermelons since it has low calorific value and high nutrient density and water content. So while you burn your calories in the gym, you can follow it up with a cool watermelon drink. Watermelons make excellent pudding, cakes, pies, salads, pickles and a whole lot of snack items. These items can be included in your daily diet without much ado. And if you still find preparing these dishes a lot hectic, just consume them raw; they are still tasty!

Watermelons are hot favorites with the Americans and those who still keep aloof from it, are keeping their body from useful nutrients. Hope you now know why being watermelon obsessed isn’t so bad an option!

A daily exercise regimen will help you to sleep better. People with sedentary life styles are more likely to have sleeping problems.

There are several natural sleeping aids available. It is better not to take any drugs as they may be potentially harmful and addictive in the long run. Getting good sleep is absolutely essential for good health.

Health Care – Irony is Thy Name

Life is full of misfortunes, accidents, and unpredictable, life changing events; which is why, we as the American people, are granted health care. However, to many, health care doesn’t seem to be fulfilling its purpose of caring and providing. If health care is supposed to support us, and be something each one of us has a right to, why is it the cause of 1.5 million bankruptcies each year, and unaffordable to half of the American people? And why is the middle class of America, the largest class, the ones struggling to pay off charges with insurance? In addition, where exactly are the outrageous charges coming from on the medical bills? And most importantly, how did this health care crisis happen to America, of all countries? These are just a few of the questions the American people are left to cope with.

What else is left to do when accidents strike without warning and a middle class family of four is left to pay off over $110,000 in medical bills? File bankruptcy – according to the U.S. Times, this seems to be the answer for most families. Take the Jackson family from Texas for example: while exiting a school bus, the Jackson’s daughter was struck by a car, leaving the family with an outrageous medical bill of $90,000. Within a few years the mother of the Jackson family needed both knees replaced at a price of $20,000. And most recently, the daughter got into another accident while driving. Before even receiving the charges, the family filed for bankruptcy.

Half of America doesn’t even have health insurance, and a lot of the families that do, are left helpless when bombarded with medical bills – especially the middle class families, like the Jackson’s. So how does this happen? How are those with health insurance still charged thousands? The truth lies behind the instability and inconsistency of the health care system. To elaborate, imagine a man without insurance comes into the emergency room with a broken hip to undergo surgery. He is charged $35,000. Since the man does not have insurance, his procedure will inevitably cost the hospital more money.

So where do they get this extra money? Well, say a second man comes into the same emergency room with a broken hip; however, this man has insurance. Unfortunately, since the man before him cost the hospital more money because he didn’t have insurance, the hospital will add on higher charges on the medical bill to the man with insurance to help pay off the extra expenses incurred from the previous patient. So if health care doesn’t protect you from high medical costs, what does it do? Apparently, if it doesn’t keep you healthy, it’ll at least keep you alive: according to the Urban Institute, over 27,000 deaths occur every year that are actually medically avoidable. Sadly, those 27,000 happened to have no health care. What ever happened to the Hippocratic Oath?

Along with the overwhelming medical bills, is the speculation of what, precisely, are the charges for? How is a ¾ mile ambulance ride equivalent to $1,800? Of course the first expense that would come to mind would be the medical aid given during the ride. But what happens when nothing is done – no medication, no tests, no nothing – and you’re still being charged thousands? A similar situation arose with a couple in Pennsylvania. When the couple found themselves in a horrific car accident, they were airlifted via helicopter to the nearest hospital – the ride was no longer than ten minutes long. The bill for the ride amounted to $18,000. However, when asked what exactly was done in the helicopter to medically aid the couple, the husband declared “nothing.” If no medical aid is given, other than the transportation, how do these charges add up? After doing a little research on different helicopter expenses, I found something that grabbed my attention: a ninety minute helicopter tour of the Grand Canyon, Hoover Dam, Valley of Fire, and Las Vegas strip costs $248 per adult, according to allvegastours.com. So, for a helicopter ride that is an roughly eighty minutes less, using basically the same amount of fuel per mile, what is the $17,504 difference of charges routing from if no medication or medical procedures are used along the way? Unfortunately, even the couple who is held responsibly for these charges hasn’t gotten the answer either.

Finally, the last, but most important question is how did a problem like this happen to America? A recent study done by the Common Wealth Fund, shows that out of seven predominately wealthy, stable countries, the American people reported as being the unhappiest with their current health care system. One statistic for instance, was that 25% of American’s will actually forgo a doctor’s appointment because they believe the pricey costs from the visit and the prescriptions could be better spent on other immediate financial needs – such as paying off bills – rather than their own personal health. And yes, that 25% is a big number, considering all the other countries surveyed didn’t even make it into the double digit percentile.

How does something like this happen to a country that never settles for mediocrity? Take for example our military. When we’re threatened or weak, we spend tons of money to invest in more high quality weapons and protection. Schooling is another prime example – we have the top universities in the world, and we invest as much money as necessary into constantly improving them. If America is a country based on freedom, and equal rights for each individual, why haven’t we given those people we go to extreme lengths to protect, serve, and educate, their right to an available, affordable, healthy life?

Health Tips – Treating Varicose and Spider Veins

If seeking out a treatment for vein dysfunction, there are fortunately a number of impressive options which are helpful for those seeking out a way to remove the visible veins as well as their side effects. With personal research and a trusted vein doctor, treatments are possible

To treat varicose and spider veins, patients now have the option of minimally invasive treatments that involve simple injections, the use of lasers, and catheters for more advanced dysfunction. In addition to these, medical experts are finding other ways to treat veins in a way that helps get patients back to their everyday lives in little time. There are currently a number of valid options that patients ought to spend some time investigating. Most patients will note that performing personal research on their own is a great way to learn more about what procedures are available and which procedures offer the best solution for their particular situation. Since every patient is unique, it is a great idea to seek out information so that the patient can approach an initial consultation with some idea of what they are seeking.

Varicose and spider veins are actually quite common and a large number of individuals have some form of vein dysfunction in their lives at some point. This is especially true in the western parts of the world and some of the issue has been attributed to poor dietary habits in conjunction with a lack of real physical fitness. It is thus important to examine how your lifestyle may contribute to venous health dysfunction and how you can implement changes to support healthy and fully functional veins. One issue in relation to diet is weight gain and undue pressures on the veins of the legs and other areas of the body.

Though varicose and spider veins can be genetically linked to heredity, some patients can help to maintain vein health by maintaining a healthy weight. This is also connected to physical fitness which helps to maintain a healthy heart and cardiovascular system. This in turn supports healthy and strong veins. As we age, the vein wall or lining can weaken and this is a normal part of aging with time. Yet we can help to maintain a healthy heart through attention to diet and exercise. This is very important and can diminish the likelihood of acquiring venous dysfunction in time.

There are a number of minimally invasive options these days, including injections, laser treatments, and catheter treatments which involve minimal if any invasive treatment and some patients don’t even need anesthesia. They can be performed in less than an hour, allowing patients to get back to work and their other everyday activities in little time. It is thus imperative that patients seek out which option suits them best. Of course a trained and experienced vein doctor can support the patient toward better understanding their treatment options and which is best for their particular issue. When it comes to varicose and spider veins, there may be different treatments depending on the type of vein and its size. This can be discussed with your vein doctor to find out which treatment is best.

Health Tips For Busy People: Healthy Diet & Exercise In the Office

Many women’s lifestyle magazines frustrate us by providing exercise regimens for work and then adding: “You can do this exercise in your office!” What about those of us who work in a cube or other small space (with no floor space for Pilates-style stretches) that’s not very private (do you really want your boss to wander by right when you’re doing jumping jacks?). Even if you are cube-confined, you can maintain your health in a cube.

Make A “Health” Drawer

Your filing spaces are your friends. Most cubes have lots of little drawers. Make one of them a “health” drawer. Add a ziplock bag or two with healthy non-perishable snacks in it (maybe dried veggies), a few bags of herbal, non-caffeinated tea (switch over from coffee midday to help you sleep better at night), and a travel-size hand-sanitizing gel for use regularly when there’s a cold going around the office (did you know most colds are transmitted through shared objects like doorknobs?). A decorative canvas bag can store an extra pair of athletic shoes in case you can take a 10 minute walk or stretch break over lunch.

Get Blood Back To Your Brain:

Pop goes the weasel. When you sit in a cube in front of a computer or on the phone for hours at a time, gravity pulls your blood towards your feet. It pools in your feet, ankles, and fanny; if you’re ever noticed your feet looking puffy towards the end of the day, the puffiness may be a side-effect of having blood spending so much time down there! Our arm and leg muscles function as “pumps” to get blood back to the heart.

While you could just do jumping jacks to get the blood flowing back upwards, there are less noticeable ways to get blood moving: If you’ve got a shelf in your high in your cube, keep daily useables (paperclips, stapler) there; getting up regularly will remind you to stretch. While standing lift your legs up at the knee, one at a time, to help get blood flowing. One enterprising woman kept a postcard pinned up towards the very top of her cube wall – and kept an ever-growing collection of postcards that she exchanged every day in the afternoon. The new postcard each day perked her up, and it gave her a reminder to get up and stretch several times a day.

Muscular injury is common in the desk-job world. The Center for Disease Control reports that 92,576 injuries resulted from repetitive motion, including typing or key entry. Make sure to take breaks from the keyboard at least once an hour. Use a wrist support at your computer when you are typing or browsing, Your forearm, wrist, and hand should be on a level, not making a V. The Harvard RSI action group suggests some exercises to help prevent repetitive stress injuries (http://www.rsi.deas.harvard.edu/). If you spend a lot of time on the phone and can’t use a speaker phone, don’t hold the phone by crunching your shoulder against your ear. Instead, invest in or ask for a headset or shoulder support for your receiver.

Drink Plenty Of Water:

Drinking water is very important. It can help you recover from a cold more quickly (though it doesn’t “cure” it), replenish lost fluids after exercise, and assist in weight loss (many people think they are hungry when they are actually thirsty, so make sure to take a drink before diving for the candy machine). Keep a four-cup bottle or thermos near the computer and replenish daily. Don’t overdo though – excess water can dilute important minerals and vitamins in your blood stream.

Make Sure To Take Your Vitamins & Other Pills:

Pill reminders. Do you need regularly forget to take vitamins because you’re busy? Find an attractive, desk-top container to put the bottle in – a decorative flower pot is one option. Something attractive and eye catching will remind you it’s there. This can also work for daily medications, but keep in mind that some medications can be toxic to others or have street-value (many prescribed pain killers), so these are medications that should stay with you, rather than your desk.

The Benefit of Eating Fruits

Fruits are an essential part of your diet. Eating fruits could satisfy your hunger for sugary foods. Fruits could satisfy your daily requirement for fiber. Some of you might eat your fruits for no other reason but to help with your Constipation problem. Fruits could also give you a big boost with your antioxidant intake. You could be eating your fruits for your daily requirement of vitamins. Eating fruits has many benefits.

What if you stop eating meats and poultry. What if you also went vegan. Where could you get your daily requirement of proteins? Most would want to eat soy products for their protein content. Most health sites and health stores are not aware of the damaging effects of soy foods. You could refer to these articles from Dr. Mercola’s Site. Since this article is about the benefits of eating fruits, the answer must be to eat fruits to get your daily requirement of proteins. Most of you may not be aware of this, but fruits contain a small amount of protein.

A person on a raw or vegan diet can get their proteins from fruits alone. Eating a piece of fruit can give you up to 1 gram of protein. Protein from fruits is very compatible with the human body since it is natural and uncooked. Your body does not require as much protein as you were led to believe especially if you eat your proteins uncooked. A daily 25 grams of protein is all your body needs. It has been known that eating a lot of protein especially cooked protein can lead to Cancer and other diseases.

You might be asking : how will I be able to build my muscle if I just eat fruits for protein? I need my meat and chicken to build strong muscles. Fruits do not build strong muscles.

A gorilla or even a monkey does not eat meat or chicken. These animals eat mostly fruits and nuts. Fruits will give you the purest and best form of protein. Here is a site about a person that eats nothing but raw foods. If you want to know the protein content of different types of fruit, you can visit CalorieKing.

When you eat your fruits, make sure that you eat them on an empty stomach or at least make sure that you have not eaten any foods for one hour. Fruits pass through the stomach very quickly and if they are slowed by other foods especially fats, then they will ferment. You do not want to let that happen.

Eating fruits can also satisfy your sugar cravings. We as humans are designed to eat fruits in large amounts without affecting us negatively. Eating fruits will not cause you to ever get diabetes as long as they are eaten by themselves. Processed sugars are one of the major causes of diabetes. Nowadays, people are eating large amounts of sugar a day. How will the body cope with all that processed sugar? It was never designed to take that amount of sugar. Even healthy bread in health food stores are loaded with sugar. Babies grow up eating a lot of sugar. No wonder diabetes is out of control. It has become very difficult for anyone to avoid processed sugar even if you only go to buy your food from health food stores.

Raw foods have a lot of sugar in them but they are the right type of sugar which your body can assimilate without causing any illness. Diabetes can easily be cured by going raw. We were never meant to eat cooked foods. My diet has become mostly raw. I have managed to average 80% raw 20% cooked.

You should always try to eat the whole fruit. Avoid fruit juices even if you make them fresh at home. Fruit juices lack the fiber and the nutrients that are found in the pulp of the whole fruit. Most vitamins, carotenoids and flavonoids are located on the skin of the fruit. These help properly digest the fruit and slow the absorption of the sugar in the fruit.

When you get any cravings between meals, you should go and buy a couple of fruits to satisfy yourself until your next meal. You will be surprised at the amount of fruits you end up eating during the day. Eating fruits in front of other people might even make them want to have a piece of fruit as well. Hopefully, this can encourage your colleagues, your friends and your family to start eating more fruits. Let us all try to be healthy.

Hopefully I was able to convince you to eat your fruits.
