Organic Candy – Consumer and Environmental Health
In response to elevated buyer awareness, candy bar manufacturers are focusing on environmental sustainability issues reflecting changes in bean to bar processing practices. Many are developing increasingly successful fair trade, organic and environmentally responsible product lines. These product marketing campaigns involve not only promoting consumer health, but the health of the environment as well.
Good taste has become synonymous with good works for companies like Green & Black, Equal Exchange, Champlain Chocolate, Pure Fun, Yummy Earth and Newman’s Own. Experts note that these organic candy industry leaders are changing the image of healthy eating with better ingredients and tastier products. Higher percentages of chocolate, exotic fruits and fancy grade inclusions are expanding the market beyond simple candy bars.
Green & Black has 12 varieties in its line, Endangered Species recently debuted 5 more premium level bars to their repertoire, Champlain added truffles, Yummy Earth is launching Gummi Bears and Pure Fun is laying claim to the first ever organic candy canes just in time for the holidays. One might think with all this variety flooding the wholesale candy stores, there could not possibly be money to be made, but they are wrong. In fact, the organic food industry as a whole is booming.
According to the Organic Trade Association, in 2007, wholesale candy and snack purchases in this niche reached $1 billion. Sources at Equal Exchange say they started 2009 with a 12% gain. Sales at Endangered Species are up 121% this year. Some complain that higher prices make it tough to actually gauge whether this positive trend will continue, but the promise of big bucks is not the only benefit.
Fair Trade candy like the kind Equal Exchange makes, allows local farmers to reap some of that benefit by making a fair portion of the profits on each sale. Hillside’s Go Naturally candy is a NJ based organic brand that also promotes green living. Many consumers support environmental causes that support indigenous cultures, or locally-made products, having this manufacturing philosophy results in stronger loyalty and better sales. And although consumers find organic candy is generally more expensive than conventional, a good number believe the benefits are worth it.
Analysts agree that advertising and packaging play an important role in educating consumers about the issues. Increasingly, customers are interested in learning how their candy gets made and not just how it tastes. Candy stores that keep these desires in mind will not only do well fiscally, but present a healthy candy agenda on the forefront of the industry–one candy bar at a time.
Feng Shui Health Tips For General Health and a Good Emotional State
Following are tips to boost your health using feng shui fountains, salt water cure, plants, air, light, color, and sound. All of these means will help to purify the energy in your home, increase the healthy energy Chi, decrease the unhealthy energy Sha Chi, and thus promote health.
Fountains: Fountains are an extremely powerful feng shui cure. Water is the source of life, and humans consist of 60% water. Fountains create a soothing and relaxing sound that helps to reduce the everyday stress and tension. They help you feel better, similar to how you feel in nature. Moreover, fountains add moisture to the air and emit healthy negative ions. You can place them anywhere you want, except for the bedroom, as it may disturb your sleep.
Salt water cure: This purifier captures the bad Sha Chi energy and improves health; this feng shui health charm can be purchased or made. It is made using a pilsner glass, salt, six Chinese coins, and water. It is placed where you want to purify or boost the energy, such as the health zone, wealth, love, or career zone. You need to be careful not to touch it or move it too much. The glass will start to form crystals from the “captured bad energy”; it needs to be replaced when a number of larger crystals build up; it needs to be discarded in a sealed container.
Indoor plants: Plants purify the air and promote positive energy Chi. They can be placed anywhere in your home; plants with round leaves will also help to boost wealth.
Air: Air is essential to humans – we breathe in air every few seconds. Air is like an invisible fuel for our bodies. The feng shui health tip in regard to air is to open the windows in your home/office frequently, even if it’s just for a few minutes at a time.
Light: Light has a large impact on humans. The best light for us is natural light, and the worst is the flickering fluorescent light. Fluorescent light bulbs have become a part of our interiors. Many people use them in corridors, and even kitchens and bathrooms, as these light bulbs cost less and last longer than regular ones. However, fluorescent light is extremely bad for health – it has been known to cause dermatitis, bipolar swings, fatigue, and headaches in some people. The feng shui health tip: replace fluorescent bulbs with regular wherever you can, and try to create more access for natural light in your home.
Color: Colors impact our mood and feelings. For instance, green is neutral, blue is relaxing and soothing, while red is energizing and agitating. If you suspect that your rooms have wrong colors (colors that you don’t like), consider redecorating these rooms using the colors that make you feel good.
Sound: Sounds are also important for our health – they need to create a soothing and relaxing atmosphere. You can use wind chimes, bells, and indoor water fountain for pleasing sounds indoors.

On the other hand, a health plan can also be purchased on a group basis by a company to cover all of its employees. 5 More Common Health Problems During Pregnancy and Their Solutions
You have already read the first part of this article, which explains 5 most common health problems during pregnancy. They are morning sickness, fatigue, frequent urination, constipation, and heartburn. Now you will read another 5, and of course, with their solutions.
Here they are:
6. Headache
Headache commonly occurs in pregnancy, especially during the first trimester. You get a dull headache in the entire head with or without the pain at backside of the neck.
The exact reason for these headaches is unknown. However, they seem to be related to hormonal changes during pregnancy since they generally get better during second trimester, when your hormonal levels tend to stabilize. Lack of proper night sleep, dehydration, stress, fatigue, sinus congestion or eyestrain might also lead to headaches during pregnancy.
Solutions
o Try finding out the cause of pain. If the headaches are due to lack of enough sleep, bring in naps in your day’s schedule and sleep for 9-10 hours at night. If arguments with family of friends are causing the problem, settle with appropriate solutions. Avoid reading too much and get eyesight checked if eyestrain is causing headache. If tension is the reason, try applying cool or warm compress to your head.
o Take a shower and get a head massage done.
o Never keep your stomach empty and eat frequently
o Use relaxation techniques like yoga and meditation or go for acupuncture.
You must not take any of the painkillers like ibuprofen or aspirin during pregnancy. Instead, consult your health care provider and get the medications that are safe during pregnancy.
7. Abdominal pain
From second trimester onwards, you might feel a stretching pain in the lower abdomen. The pain might be brief but sharp or might be dull and long lasting. This pain occurs because of stretching and thickening of ligaments and muscles supporting your uterus to house and hold the new girth of uterus.
Abdominal pain might also occur because of constipation and/or gas and bloating.
Solutions
o If the pain is due to stretching of ligaments, changing your positions while you are discomforted might help.
o In case of the reasons being constipation and/or gas, the remedies are getting rid of these causes. To cure gas:
- Avoid certain foods like broccoli, asparagus, potato and pasta as they cause gas. Some fiber-rich foods like cabbage, Brussels sprouts, cauliflower, beans, oat bran, and many fruits might also cause gas but since you need fiber to avoid constipation, you cannot avoid their intake, but reduce it. You can also consider taking wheat bran. It is an excellent source of fiber and does not cause gas.
- Eat small and frequent meals.
- Take the fluids in between the meals instead of taking them along.
- Do not take aerated drinks and avoid chewing gums.
- Practice moderate exercises or yoga.
8. Sleeping problems
Women invariably get insomnia during pregnancy. This probably occurs because of discomforts due to frequent need to urinate, headache, backache, or anxiousness and excitement about new baby’s arrival.
Solutions
o Try taking a warm bath or body massage before your sleep.
o Avoid eating before going to bed.
o Ensure that the temperature of room where you sleep is suitable. Also, ensure there is no light or sound in the room.
o If you are unable to sleep, do not worry; instead relax yourself by reading a book or listening to music.
o When your abdomen is big, sleeping on side with a pillow between the legs and one under the abdomen will comfort you.
Try sleeping on your left side, which is the best position as it allows a better flow of blood and nutrients to your baby through placenta. In this position, your kidneys also are able to eliminate waste and fluids more efficiently reducing the swelling in your hands and feet. Sleeping on back may increase backache, impair your digestion, blood circulation and your breathing. In 2nd and 3rd trimester, it may also affect your blood pressure.
9. Changes in skin color
During pregnancy, some women get brown or yellowing patch over nose and cheeks and around the eyes. These are called ‘chloasma or melasma’. They can occur on other body parts as well.
In many women, a dark line appears on midline of their lower abdomen, this is called ‘linea nigra’.
All these discolorations occur because of increased synthesis of melanin, a pigment that gives color to your skin and hair. They usually go after delivery. However, there are ways to reduce their formation while you are bearing your baby.
Solutions
o Avoid going out in sun. Sunlight further increases melanin formation. Use sun block containing SPF 15.
o Do not bleach your skin to get rid of pigmentation instead use makeup to conceal.
10. Backache
Backache occurs because of many reasons. Your ligaments that join pelvic bones to spine are made loose to facilitate childbirth causing pain when you stand, walk or sit for a long time. Increasing size of uterus also puts a strain on your back. Finally, since your muscles have to carry extra weight, they have to do extra work that makes them exhausted and hence painful.
Solutions
o Sit on a chair, which has a good support for your back.
o Avoid standing for long periods.
o Bend your knees, instead to back
o Do not lift heavy objects.
o Sleep on your left (preferably) side, with a pillow under your abdomen and between your legs
o From early pregnancy, begin an exercise program. Frequently stretch your body. Swimming is also a good exercise to strengthen your back and abdominal muscles.
o Avoid wearing high-heeled shoes and try to stand straight (although it might be difficult).
o You can also consider using abdomen-supporting girdles.
Controlling Inflammation Is Essential To Your Health
The news reports are full of stories on how chronic inflammation is killing us all. Why is controlling inflammation the #1 health concern of the 21st century? Doctors agree chronic inflammation is the root of all serious diseases. Alzheimer’s, heart disease, even cancer -they’re all rooted in inflammation.
Of course, it’s a bit confusing because short term inflammation is a good thing.
For example, if you have a cold your red blood cells rush in and kill the virus so you get better. Likewise, if you cut your finger while chopping vegetables, your red blood cells rush in and kill the damaged skin tissue. The swelling, throbbing and redness you see and feel afterward is your body’s way of telling you it’s healing itself.
Unfortunately, ongoing inflammation is dangerous. In fact, it’s now known as the “silent killer” because it creeps into your body and creates everything from dangerous blood clots to cancer cells.
Inflammation is the biggest health problem of the last 100 years. It leads to a multitude of chronic and deadly diseases and it’s brought on by the modern evils of processed foods and lack of exercise.
You Can Control Inflammation
That’s the bad news. Here’s the good news.
You controlling inflammation is a matter of eating healthy foods, learning to control your stress and not eating foods you may be allergic to or have a sensitivity towards.
And, you might have a food sensitivity or outright allergy and not know it.
You may have noticed the rise of gluten free products on the shelves at your grocery. That’s because a growing number of people are discovering they can’t eat gluten anymore. The bad news is, gluten is in most breads and a lot of common foods. The good news is, more alternatives are offered so it’s getting easier to skip the gluten.
A growing number of people are also lactose intolerant (notice all the dairy free items at the store?). If you have a mild sensitivity, you might not even know it. But your body does. Every time you eat the food you’re intolerant of, it sets off an immune response where your body is producing antibodies to fight off the invader. This creates inflammation. If you eat this food everyday because you don’t know what it’s doing to you, you can see the cycle created.
And this is happening to 1000′s of us everyday.
So, what can you do?
Well one is to keep track of the foods you eat and see if you notice any particular discomfort afterward.
You can write them down in a journal. If you have rheumatoid arthritis for example, you may totally notice a connection after writing down your foods for a few days. Since rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disorder your body is destroying itself by attacking healthy cells. Imagine if it’s being caused by a food you’re eating! Better yet, imagine getting rid of the food and getting rid of the pain. Now that’s taking control of your health and controlling your inflammation.
Another way to control inflammation is to make sure you get plenty of omega 3 fatty acids. Most Americans are way deficient in these essential nutrients. If you’d like to know more about how omega 3 fatty acids will help you in controlling inflammation, please check out my website where I share the research I’ve done for you.

Watching My Mother Die of Breast Cancer
“Mom, the doctor just gave me the latest test results.” I sat down on her hospital bed, and held her hand while three tubes, pinned to the wall above her head extracted a vile brown mixture from her body. “Your breast cancer has returned!” She rested her head back down on the pillow, emotionless – not wanting to hurt her son – the messenger.
Watching someone die is a very unpleasant experience. Being tethered to your dying Mother for four weeks by a 20 foot wire connected to buzzers gives new meaning to “umbilical cord.”
Several days after delivering the news, the doctor told me that there was not much more he could do for her, and he released her by ambulance to her garden apartment in New Jersey, where I set up home for the next four weeks. She lost the strength to speak or move while tethered to the tubes in her body, so I installed a buzzer by her bed that connected to a wire that ran along the floor, through the living room and then out to the terrace, where it snaked up the leg of my chair, and connected to a flashing red light that sounded an alert like an alarm clock. There was only one setting: LOUD. At first, the buzzer sent me flying into her room, until I realized that she was just doing it to keep me on my toes. She couldn’t speak, so she gestured to the water glass, tissues, or bed pan.
Television, radio, or any loud noise was out of the question. My wife couldn’t make it down from our apartment in New York City until the weekend. In need of friends and companions, I invited a case of red wine and a box of cigars to join me in my daily death vigil.
It was only a few short years before, that I had sat on the edge of another hospital bed and comforted my 46 year old sister Patricia, who was dying of cancer. An hour after I left the hospital, the doctor called me to say that she had passed away. (God, I trust that you have forgiven me for all the things I said to You that night.)
On a cool, crisp and sunny day in September 1999, I was on my way to the Pierre Hotel in Manhattan, to interview Nancy Brinker*, the founder/president of the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, named for her sister who died of breast cancer at the age of 36.
Nancy is right out of Central Casting. Tall, attractive, intelligent, determined and very charming. She was in town to kick off the “Race for the Cure”, one of the most successful fund raising events in the country. We sat at a desk in her suite, and while my tape recorder rolled, I asked her several mundane and routine questions. I felt that I was missing a wonderful opportunity. As she got up to leave for a luncheon in her honor, hosted by Hillary Rodham Clinton at the Waldorf Astoria, I caught her at the door, and requested one more question: “If you had one wish for something to take place in the first 10 years of the new millenium, what would it be?”
“Wow, that’s interesting.” We returned to the desk and the tape recorder. “I wish that we find the CAUSE of cancer!”
There are over 100 types of cancer, so we still have our work cut out for us. However, Breast Cancer is a particulary hideous disease, with it’s hidden secrets – taunting us to defeat it.
My mother was a product of the Great Depression, and had some ingrained habits that still prevailed – like hiding money. When my wife and I visited my Mother for Thanksgiving and St. Patrick’s Day, I would leave a note with clues to find $20 bills that I had hidden all around the house. It was only when I got home that I would call her and tell her where the note was that held all the clues. When my wife first found out about this game she said, “Michael, that’s so cruel!” My mother absolutely loved it! Sometimes she would call me the next day to say that she had stayed up most of the night, because there was still one $20 bill she couldn’t find.
My mother was rapidly deteriorating. It wasn’t a pleasant site to see a woman who was so active and alive. Driving, taking trips to Branson, Mo. for her new found love of Country music.
I had to undertake a very unpleasant task. I called a cousin whom my Mother adored, and asked Rita if she would help me. I explained to her that I feared that my Mother may have money hidden around the house, and could she please ask her for me.
With hand signals, she led us to the hope chest in the corner. Inside was a note that had a series of clues, that led to envelopes, keys to boxes, and riddles. After a day and a half of following clues that led to loose boards, picture frames, and false bottoms, we had uncoverd over $33,000.00 in cash. I didn’t have the nerve, so I asked Rita to please ask my Mother if we had found all of it. She came out of the bedroom with tears running down her face, “Your Mother said to tell you that it’s for her funeral.”
During those four weeks that I sat on the terrace, jumping at the buzzer as cigar ashes flew in my face, I reminisced of times gone by; I remember her yelling at police detectives telling them that her saintly son couldn’t possibly have done that; yelling at Mickey Mantle to look up and say hello to her son (he did), getting me into the best possible schools; (she had a way with authority figures);paying for Mrs. Murphy’s broken window; and a very strict code on how to treat girls.(The Nuns in my Catholic High School were pretty good at this too!) My mother was also a very big fan of Susan B. Anthony. I never knew who this person was. I assumed she was a movie star.
Breast Cancer is a hideous disease, I was thinking as I drove my Mother’s car to the County Seat to file her death certificate. I popped in her favorite cassette of Garth Brooks and sang along. It started to rain very heavily. I gratefully pulled the car off to the side of the road, as I was crying too hard to safely drive any further. (God, I trust you forgive me for the things I said to You that night)
So, how do you react to someone’s illness?
Your little girl comes screaming into the house, blood running down her knee, tears streaming down her face. How many seconds does it take for you to jump off the couch? Your pet dog or cat comes yelping and limping into the room – a thorn in it’s paw. How long does it take you to jump off the couch? A loved one comes into the room – she tells you she has breast cancer…I trust I did as well as I could.
I can’t even fathom or pretend to know what mental anguish a woman has to bear when she’s been told she has breast cancer.
We have a little over 2 years for Nancy Brinker’s wish to come through. Perhaps we can all look under our mattresses and find a dollar or two and send it to our favorite breast cancer charity. And may God be with every woman and family going through this ordeal.
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. In 2007 in the US, an estimated 200,000 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer.
Prostate Health for Men
Prostate health is one of the most important aspects of a man’s health and is essential in the prevention of a number of conditions that can affect it. In recent years the issue of prostate health has moved to the forefront of many news and media stories and many of us know or have known someone who has suffered from prostate problems.
If you’re a man, chances are that you will eventually have some form of problem with your prostate gland. More than half of men over age 60 develop an enlarged prostate, a condition known as benign prostatic hyperplasia, or BPH. In addition, the American Cancer Society estimates that more than 184,000 men in the United States will be diagnosed with prostate cancer this year. New cases of prostate cancer have increased rapidly in recent years. Most of this increase has been attributed to the greater use of screening guidelines, and especially the widespread introduction of the Prostate-Specific Antigen (PSA) test.
The causes of prostate cancer are not fully known. The risk of developing prostate cancer rises sharply after age 50, and risk doubles every ten years thereafter. Men with close family members (father or brother) who have had prostate cancer are more likely to get prostate cancer themselves, especially if their relatives were young when they got the disease. Fortunately there is promising research that shows preventive measures and early detection screening should help reduce the risk of death from prostate cancer.
The three common diseases of the prostate are benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), commonly known as an enlarged prostate, prostatitis (inflammation of the prostate) and prostate cancer. The modern lifestyle of stress; long hours of sitting, driving or TV watching; stuffing food and emotions; eating fast food, flesh and milk products; regular intake of sugar, caffeine, and alcohol; and environmental toxicity all set the stage for chronic, debilitating and degenerative diseases, including prostate enlargement (BPH Benign Prostatic Hypertrophy) and prostate cancer.
We have become a nutritionally advanced culture who has learned more and more about natural supplements and products that can help us achieve and maintain health much longer than we used to, as well as to eat the right foods that will make our organs function at peak levels well into late ages. The foods that a man can eat to support the health of your prostate actually have multiple health benefits in addition to prostate health. This is because they are mostly classed into a coined group of foods dubbed “super foods” for their healing and health promoting properties, as well as therapeutic uses.
As long as you maintain a quality diet with a variety of color, less red meats and more fruits and veggies, you can rest assured you are doing all you can to promote a long, healthy and complication free life for your prostate gland. Not only that, these foods will benefit other areas of your health as well, making it well worth your while to pay attention to what you put in your body.
Prostate health is extremely important and requires the same attention that you would afford any other part of your body. It is emerging as a key priority in health care today, but despite the increasing awareness of its affects many men remain unaware of its symptoms, the damage it can do and the treatments available.
